Exercise In The Morning vs. Night

Over the past few years I have come across various ideas that working out in the morning is better for you than at night and/or the other way around. The answer in my opinion is whenever you can make the time to work out and whatever can fit your schedule than make sure you make that time for fitness.

Whether youjack-row-erg are a morning person or a night owl, it’s ultimately the fact that you decide what fits your schedule for fitness and that makes the best time to fit your needs. For most hardworking individuals, there are only a few “time slots” available each day to fit in a workout. These usually occur in the morning before work, or in evening after work. Interestingly, different physiological and psychological effects seem to occur based on the timing of a training session within the day. Listed below are some of the specific benefits associated with both a morning and evening workout.

Morning workout:

– Habitual training in the morning seems to allow for the greatest long-term consistency (program adherence)

– Increases metabolism throughout the day

– Due to the body’s preference towards lipolytic activity (fat breakdown) during sleep, morning workouts can help increase total daily fat metabolism

– Can helps one “jump start” their day by increasing alertness and reducing morning grogginess

– If you plan on having a long day make time to go to bed earlier as training in the morning will cause fatigue towards the end of the day

– Simply put, you can burn more calories all day long just from the sheer fact of exercising in the morning

sunset rowEvening workout:

– Testosterone is the most responsive to exercise as it tends to release greater with workouts later in the day

– Lung efficiency appears to be greatly optimized allowing for more power and calories burned

– Core body temperature will be relatively elevated; allowing the potential for increased mobility and flexibility

– Food consumption throughout the day can allow for increased available energy

Summary

Workouts performed early in the morning seem to be better geared for overall weight loss, while workouts performed in the evening appear optimal when working on strength and/or hypertrophy gains. Personal trainers should find this information very useful when dealing with clients who have different training goals. I personally train both in the morning and at night with Roworx Fitness in Long Beach where we feature 20 indoor rowing classes every week with stunning views of the sunset overlooking Marine Stadium. Rowing is a total-body sport which builds both cardiovascular endurance and strength through repetitive resistance training. . Find out how rowing can benefit your workout or click here to learn about the types of rowing you’ll find at Roworx. An individual may have to work up to training multiple times a day and also be aware of mapping out workouts in order to maximize your fitness goals. Try to spread out your workouts during the week in order to accomplish your training goals and allow the muscles in your body to recover in order to avoid overuse injuries.
